About us

Your success propels our business

When we meet with our clients, we always start by listening. We want to hear your story or the changes since we last met. Only then can we begin to think of a plan or who, within our team of experts, should be involved, in order for us to best serve your particular needs.

This understanding of you informs our thinking, strategies, recommendations and plans which are created with your perspective, your preferences, and your best interests in mind.

This philosophy does not just drive our investment recommendations or our approach to wealth management. It is also the thinking behind our business model, the way we handle risk and our unique stance on fiduciary responsibility.

There is a reason why we are the way we are. That reason is you.

Our story
Ours is a story of two exceptional firms — both with a history of success — who came together in 2009, combining their individual strengths, perspectives and experience.

How we came to be

Ours is a story of two exceptional firms — both with a history of success — who came together in 2009, combining their individual strengths, perspectives and experience.

James Richardson & Sons (JRSL) dates back to 1857 when the company started as a one-man grain merchandising operation in Winnipeg, Manitoba. By the mid-1920s, JRSL had grown into a respected, multi-enterprise corporation, with successful operations in financial services, agriculture and food processing, energy exploration, and property management.

From early days, JRSL maintained a strong presence in Canada’s investment community, through Richardson Greenshields and later, Richardson Partners Financial. Their name has always been known for integrity, trust, leadership and excellence; and to this day they are still driven by the same pioneering spirit.

GMP Capital Inc. (GMP) is a leading diversified financial services firm, headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, and offering a wide range of financial products and services in three integrated reporting segments: Capital Markets, Wealth Management and Alternative Investments. Founded on the principles of entrepreneurship, accountability, partnership, and a spirit of creative disruption, GMP’s motto is: “Who Dares, Wins.” After all, you don’t get to be one of Canada’s leading independent financial services firms by sitting still.

Together, we leverage the knowledge and experience that comes with having a long history, while, at the same time, we confidently and responsibly trailblaze our way into the future.

What sets us apart
We think differently. You can find evidence of it in our culture, values and philosophy.

The last thing you will get from us is more of the same

We think differently. You can find evidence of it in our culture, values and philosophy.
It affects the way we approach our business; the work we do on your behalf and the kind of people we are

Here’s what it means for you

Our independence and size are, in large part, what makes it possible. We are not just one part of a huge “institution” with a lot of separate agendas and products to sell. It allows us to concentrate all our time and energy helping you create, protect and pass on your wealth.

Our clients do not have to question whose interests we are serving — they know — and, for that matter, so do we.

Our mindset is different

We think like entrepreneurs because we are entrepreneurs. Richardson GMP Investment Advisors are partners, in the truest sense of the word. Our money is invested right alongside yours.

As partners, Richardson GMP Investment Advisors have a stake – in their own business, and in Richardson GMP as a whole.

Our belief in open architecture and innovative solutions removes barriers. We are not restricted when it comes to the types of investments we can look for. We search far and wide for the products best suited to your requirements. That includes creating our own unique funds and other options to fill marketplace gaps, and looking for off-market opportunities when appropriate.

We constantly look for ways to do better, to be better, to offer you more: More independent long-term thinking, more investment choices, more strategic leadership, more innovation, more accountability, more security and less risk.

When all is said and done, what excites us is being on the forefront of what comes next.

Fiduciary excellence
What makes us most proud is that we are the first wealth management company in Canada to have this certification.

We take it even further, with Centre for Fiduciary Excellence certification

What makes us most proud is that we are the first wealth management company in Canada to have this certification. This commitment to hold ourselves to a higher standard is best explained by Andrew Marsh, Richardson GMP’s President and CEO:

“By standing up and saying that we’re willing to be held to a higher standard, we are demonstrating that we are leaders in the business of wealth management. We take our professional accountability very seriously. In these times, when clients are having difficulty knowing what and whom to trust, they can feel confident that at Richardson GMP trust is synonymous with the work that we do.”

Why is it so important?

This tells you that we aim to achieve the highest level of integrity, transparency and best practices when it comes to managing your wealth.

We voluntarily open ourselves — annually — to a rigorous, independent third-party Centre for Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX) assessment process to audit our practices. They in turn, work closely with investment fiduciaries and industry experts to provide comprehensive assessment programs to improve risk management for institutional and retail investors.

This esteemed annual certification program ensures that our Portfolio Management Account platform, for those Advisors who have been delegated control over investment decisions for their clients, conforms to the global fiduciary standards of excellence.

To earn the certification, we must demonstrate adherence to seven fiduciary precepts — under the scrutiny of specialist fiduciary auditors. This extensive process involves a detailed evaluation of operational data and procedures — and on-site interviews with key members of the team.

The seven precepts that comprise best practice fiduciary standards

  1. Know standards, laws and trust provisions
  2. Diversify assets to the specific risk/return profile of the client
  3. Prepare an Investment Policy Statement
  4. Use “prudent experts” and document due diligence
  5. Monitor the activities of the “prudent experts”
  6. Control and account for investment expenses
  7. Avoid conflicts of interest and prohibited transactions
It is important to us to inform our clients and the industry that we are committed to setting standards and best practices for Richardson GMP, while at the same time provide our clients with a truly responsible strategic partner and fiduciary.
